Components of the ECL examination
When assessing your German language skills, people usually refer to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR / GER).
It defines the following levels of language competence:
A1 and A2
Here you learn the basics of the German language. If you have no prior knowledge, the A1 foundation course is important.
B1 and B2
Here you learn German at an advanced level. You expand your language skills and after completing level B2 you can communicate independently and in a nuanced way in everyday life and at work.
C1 and C2
Here you learn German at the highest language level.
At the end of these courses you will master German almost as well as people who grew up with the language.

We hold international accreditations for delivering the ECL examination at our various centres in several countries around the world.
The ECL examination offers standardised tests for the languages of the EU member states and the candidate countries.
Fifteen different languages are currently examined: Hebrew, Hungarian, Italian, Bulgarian, Russian, Croatian, Czech, English, French, German, Polish, Romanian, Serbian, Slovak and Spanish.
The ECL language tests use a four-level structure to assess your language skills — German at A2, B1, B2 and C1 level with four decisive components — speaking, writing, listening and reading.
As part of your visa application you must master the German language and present a B1 or B2 certificate. The German language institutes — Goethe, Telc, ÖSD and ECL — have been recognised by ALTE (Association of Language Testers in Europe).
The visa handbook is issued by the Auswärtiges Amt (Federal Foreign Office) in Germany, and ECL is accepted by all German consulates and embassies worldwide.
