Germany is the most populous country in the European Union, with a population of about 83 million people (as at 2021). Population density is about 230 inhabitants per square kilometre. People over 65 make up about 21 per cent, while those under 18 make up about 16 per cent. Life expectancy at birth is about 81 years.
The largest cities in Germany:
- Berlin – with about 3.8 million inhabitants, Berlin is Germany's largest city. It is also the capital and the country's political centre.
- Hamburg – with about 1.9 million inhabitants, Hamburg is Germany's second largest city. It is an important centre of trade and business.
- Munich – with about 1.5 million inhabitants, Munich is Germany's third largest city. It is known for its cultural events, its architecture and its beer gardens.
- Cologne – with about 1.1 million inhabitants, Cologne is Germany's fourth largest city. It is known for its historic old town and its cathedral.
- Frankfurt am Main – with about 750,000 inhabitants, Frankfurt am Main is Germany's fifth largest city. It is an important centre of finance and trade and is home to Germany's largest airport.
These five are the largest cities in Germany and each has a history, culture and economic landscape of its own. They are also popular destinations for tourists from all over the world.
